Advice for the Weekend

Standard

I always find it so interesting when you receive an unexpected gift at just the right time.

Yesterday my friend, Kareem, gave me some amazing advice that I want to share with you all as we prepare for the weekend.

After chatting aboutΒ Shampagne and the usual “How are you’s?” and “What projects do you have coming up?” I asked him if he had any advice about how to balance life as the creative lives we lead grow busier. This is what he said…

“Follow your bliss.

Structure your time.

Don’t feel bad being selfish.

Set deadlines.

Challenge yourself.

Be protective of your creativity.

Be generous with your creativity.

Sleep.

Drink plenty of water.

Trust your tribe.

Have fun!”

Pretty great words don’t you think? As we begin the winter thaw, and watch the days long and the grass and flowers grow high, remember these words as you tackle your projects and dreams.

If I could add only one thing to this list it would be: Don’t forget to breathe!

What a refreshing and lovely weekend! It was jam packed fun in Connecticut celebrating the marriage between my friends Lauren and Brooke. The ceremony was beautiful with Lauren’s father officiating the momentous occasion, quoting scripture and Ghostface Killah. The love was palpable, the food delicious, the tunes fantastic, and new friends were made over the course of the weekend.

A low key rehearsal dinner under the stars and twinkle lights Friday night, allowed us to see the gals one last time before tying the knot. I got to meet the brides’ families and college/childhood friends and trade stories about how we all ended up at the event together.

Apple picking, petting zoo, corn maze and a hayride were the pre-wedding activities I did with Ash Lee and Julia at March Farm. (A check off my bucket list. Woohoo!)

Since I still have limited storage over in my WordPress media, (grumble grumble) you should peep my Instagram feed on the left side of the screen for pics from the weekend!

this is a relatively late post, but hey, better late than never! This weekend was a whirlwind of performances, travel, family time, productivity and friend demanded recovery time. From a fabulous performance at That Bachelorette ShowΒ to taking a 6am bus to DC to spend a quick day with my brother and his family to finally nailing down the first weekend of “principal photography” for Shampagne, it was a grand ole time.

Sunday afternoon I was #pooped! But I have recovered for the most part and have a few photos to share

Ciao 😊

This week’s #AboutLastNight is all about “Not In This Room,” the production I’m working in as a part of the Fire This Time Festival Festival downtown. What a fantastic opening weekend, three shows down with only two more to go, this experience has been a great one. Not only do I get to work with Daaimah Mubashshir again (read here about our last collaboration) but I’ve made new connections with my fellow actors.

On top of opening a show, my good friend Andrew and his classmate Andrea, made their first trip down from Syracuse on Friday for a ceramics conference. 2015 has officially begun now that I have had a taste of home πŸ™‚

Hope you enjoy the photos, and if you’re in the New York area head over to horsetrade.info to buy your ticket to the Fire This Time Festival’s 10-minute Play Festival.

Happy Friday!

Another work week is behind us, “Not In This Room,” the production I’m currently in opens tonight, and darn it I’ve had a good week. So what do I do when I have a good week? I dance, naturally. πŸ™‚

Have a stupendous weekend friends!

“Warrior”
(feat. Mark Foster & A-Trak)

My hands are tied
But my eyes are open
This modern denial
Has me broken

Nothing mystical
No hullabaloo
Just chemicals
And no one looking down on you

What am I thinking (if you’re so sure it’s rational)
While the world’s shrinking (but that don’t make it logical)
What am I thinking (if you say I’m just an animal)
I feel like I’m sinking (you can’t explain away the way I feel)

You’re just pushing me down, pushing me down, pushing me down
(They tell you ‘trust your head, be like men’ but never feel like you’re good enough)
You’re just crushing me down, crushing me down, crushing me down
(They wanna take our light, make us fight, but never cry for the ones you love)

(I’ll be your warrior, warrior)

You’re taking over
And I’m feeling small
When I was a child
I knew it all

Nothing magical
No hologram behind the door
Just a chain reaction
But I know I’m made for more!

What am I thinking (if you’re so sure it’s rational)
While the world’s shrinking (but that don’t make it logical)
What am I thinking (if you say I’m just an animal)
I feel like I’m sinking (you can’t explain away the way I feel)

And you’re just pushing me down, pushing me down, pushing me down
(They tell you, ‘trust your head, be like men’ but never feel like you’re good enough)
You’re just pushing me down, pushing me down, pushing me down
(They wanna take our light, make us fight, but never cry for the ones you love)

And you’re just pushing me down, pushing me down, pushing me down
(You wanna change the world, but your girls will be seen and not be heard)
You just crushing me down, crushing me down, crushing me down
(They wanna take our light, make us fight, but never cry for the ones you love)

And you’re just pushing me down, pushing me down, pushing me down
(They tell you, ‘trust your head, trust your head’)
You’re just pushing me down, pushing me down, pushing me down
(They wanna take our light, take our light, but never cry for the ones you love)

And you’re just pushing me down, pushing me down, pushing me down
(You wanna change the world, but your girls will be seen and not be heard)
You just crushing me down, crushing me down, crushing me down
(They wanna take our light, make us fight, but never cry for the ones you love)

Hey all!

Happy Monday! This week’s #AboutLastNight post features pics from my apartment’s annual “Christmas in Harlem” party. Willow and I slaved in the kitchen and living room all day getting the apartment in festive, good time shape. I believe we succeeded! The drinks were flowing, all of the food was gobbled up and there was laughter and conversation all night long. I didn’t take as many pictures this year seeing as how my phone also played the role of DJ all night long. Hopefully, the ones aboveΒ gave an accurate snapshot of the holiday cheer!

Ciao 😊

A new month! A new week! A Monday recap of all things fun from the weekend. Since I’m still catching up on blogs that went un-seen last month, this edition of #AboutLastNight features photos not only from Halloween fun, but birthday celebrations for Jason the week before.
