Advice for the Weekend

Standard

I always find it so interesting when you receive an unexpected gift at just the right time.

Yesterday my friend, Kareem, gave me some amazing advice that I want to share with you all as we prepare for the weekend.

After chatting aboutย Shampagne and the usual “How are you’s?” and “What projects do you have coming up?” I asked him if he had any advice about how to balance life as the creative lives we lead grow busier. This is what he said…

“Follow your bliss.

Structure your time.

Don’t feel bad being selfish.

Set deadlines.

Challenge yourself.

Be protective of your creativity.

Be generous with your creativity.

Sleep.

Drink plenty of water.

Trust your tribe.

Have fun!”

Pretty great words don’t you think? As we begin the winter thaw, and watch the days long and the grass and flowers grow high, remember these words as you tackle your projects and dreams.

If I could add only one thing to this list it would be: Don’t forget to breathe!

Happy Friday

Standard

Hey all!

Sorry I’ve been absent this week, trust me the plan was to start saturating my blog with photos, posts and recollections about my St. Thomas vacation, to make you uber jealousย excited about your next trip! But, curses to the blog gods, my storage is way too full in my media library and I have to figure out what my next move will be; deleting files or buying storage? A true problem believe you me because I love sharing my photos with you each week. So my apologies, but you’ll have to wait for the St. Thomas photos to be posted next week!

Have a great weekend! Make it fun, it’s almost July!

To celebrate my first Rising Circle event-a-palooza as a full-fledged member, here’s a little “foxy” fun! Lyrics are below. ๐Ÿ™‚

*I originally posted a short bit of this on Instagram to celebrate my involvement in the One-Minute Play Festival.

A Winner never quits
And a quitter never wins
I thought about what I wanted
And you were on my list

[Verse 2: Justin Timberlake]
Remember where I was?
In the desert with no love
No cactus’s, just dust
And you swept me from above

[Refrain: Both]

[Pre-Chorus: Both]
So I just wanna say
Thank you for this day
Cause it is so good
Good Honey

[Chorus: Both]
You got me feelin’ brand new (brand new)
You got me feelin’ brand new (brand new)
Like the tag’s still on me
Like the tags still on me
Jumpin’ ’round in your bag
Jumpin’ ’round in your bag
So good morning, ooh girl
You are the feeling I’m jammin’ to (brand new)
You are the feeling I’m jammin’ to (brand new)
Like the tag’s still on me
Got the tags still on me

[Refrain x2: Both]

[Verse 3: Pharrell]
Life to me is easy
People make it complicated
When love is the tool
No reason we can’t make it

[Verse 4: Justin Timberlake]
Come on, let’s go, be brave
Feel somethin’ at theย [?]
Once we know that amaze
Then give it all away

[Refrain: Both]

[Pre-Chorus]

[Chorus: Both]

[Bridge: Both]
All my life, when I describe
What I want, I’ve been misunderstood
The more I try, at bein’ satisfied
And didn’t think that I could
But then you came along, and you made me strong
Like God said you would

Happy Friday!

Another work week is behind us, “Not In This Room,” the production I’m currently in opens tonight, and darn it I’ve had a good week. So what do I do when I have a good week? I dance, naturally. ๐Ÿ™‚

Have a stupendous weekend friends!

“Warrior”
(feat. Mark Foster & A-Trak)

My hands are tied
But my eyes are open
This modern denial
Has me broken

Nothing mystical
No hullabaloo
Just chemicals
And no one looking down on you

What am I thinking (if you’re so sure it’s rational)
While the world’s shrinking (but that don’t make it logical)
What am I thinking (if you say I’m just an animal)
I feel like I’m sinking (you can’t explain away the way I feel)

You’re just pushing me down, pushing me down, pushing me down
(They tell you ‘trust your head, be like men’ but never feel like you’re good enough)
You’re just crushing me down, crushing me down, crushing me down
(They wanna take our light, make us fight, but never cry for the ones you love)

(I’ll be your warrior, warrior)

You’re taking over
And I’m feeling small
When I was a child
I knew it all

Nothing magical
No hologram behind the door
Just a chain reaction
But I know I’m made for more!

What am I thinking (if you’re so sure it’s rational)
While the world’s shrinking (but that don’t make it logical)
What am I thinking (if you say I’m just an animal)
I feel like I’m sinking (you can’t explain away the way I feel)

And you’re just pushing me down, pushing me down, pushing me down
(They tell you, ‘trust your head, be like men’ but never feel like you’re good enough)
You’re just pushing me down, pushing me down, pushing me down
(They wanna take our light, make us fight, but never cry for the ones you love)

And you’re just pushing me down, pushing me down, pushing me down
(You wanna change the world, but your girls will be seen and not be heard)
You just crushing me down, crushing me down, crushing me down
(They wanna take our light, make us fight, but never cry for the ones you love)

And you’re just pushing me down, pushing me down, pushing me down
(They tell you, ‘trust your head, trust your head’)
You’re just pushing me down, pushing me down, pushing me down
(They wanna take our light, take our light, but never cry for the ones you love)

And you’re just pushing me down, pushing me down, pushing me down
(You wanna change the world, but your girls will be seen and not be heard)
You just crushing me down, crushing me down, crushing me down
(They wanna take our light, make us fight, but never cry for the ones you love)

Happy Friday

For today’s “Flashback Friday” I’m taking a look back at April-June. There was a whole lot of traveling in this little chunk of 2014: Philly, Richmond, Washington DC, San Diego, plus I did a show (Messiah Complex), saw a show (Bullets on Broadway) and started rehearsals for another show (A Midsummer Night’s Dream). I celebrated my Aunt Cynthia’s new position as Deputy Attorney General of Virginia, went to a sonogram appointment with Jassmine, supported my friend Jenna on her new web series, treated my cousin to brunch to toast her first PR job in the city, had an amazing reunion with Mississippi folks in town, went to the opera, enjoyed the sun and sand of San Diego, had a Mother/Daughter weekend in DC, and spent quality time with my friends as I rang in my 25th birthday. Enjoy the pictures below, some are old and some have never been published, and of course you can click the month’s in the menu on the left and relive these moments with me!

2014: The Year of “See Ya Later’s” (Updated 12/15/14)

Gallery

2014

As with each year, brought with it a myriad of new opportunities, new friends and new memories, but it also brought a whole bunch of going away parties and tears too. This year I have had to say “See Ya Later” to my two rocks: Cynthia and Morgan, in the SAME MONTH, (you can read about that here), my main girls Jassmine and Nia, new friend Krystina, and Michelle (but she came back). These girls each hold special places in my heart and my life. And I take comfort in the fact that it is indeed a “See Ya Later” and not a “goodbye.”

Below are a few snapshots of the fun we got into in the city or all around the countryย this year.

*edit: Since publishing this post last week, I’ve had to say “See Ya Later” to another friend. Willow is on her way to Africa once again ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

Grand total of “See Ya Later’s”: 6

Friends who have returned: 1

The feeling of love I have for them all: Priceless
