Happy Friday!

Another work week is behind us, “Not In This Room,” the production I’m currently in opens tonight, and darn it I’ve had a good week. So what do I do when I have a good week? I dance, naturally. 🙂

Have a stupendous weekend friends!

Ciao

“Warrior”
(feat. Mark Foster & A-Trak)

My hands are tied
But my eyes are open
This modern denial
Has me broken

Nothing mystical
No hullabaloo
Just chemicals
And no one looking down on you

What am I thinking (if you’re so sure it’s rational)
While the world’s shrinking (but that don’t make it logical)
What am I thinking (if you say I’m just an animal)
I feel like I’m sinking (you can’t explain away the way I feel)

You’re just pushing me down, pushing me down, pushing me down
(They tell you ‘trust your head, be like men’ but never feel like you’re good enough)
You’re just crushing me down, crushing me down, crushing me down
(They wanna take our light, make us fight, but never cry for the ones you love)

(I’ll be your warrior, warrior)

You’re taking over
And I’m feeling small
When I was a child
I knew it all

Nothing magical
No hologram behind the door
Just a chain reaction
But I know I’m made for more!

What am I thinking (if you’re so sure it’s rational)
While the world’s shrinking (but that don’t make it logical)
What am I thinking (if you say I’m just an animal)
I feel like I’m sinking (you can’t explain away the way I feel)

And you’re just pushing me down, pushing me down, pushing me down
(They tell you, ‘trust your head, be like men’ but never feel like you’re good enough)
You’re just pushing me down, pushing me down, pushing me down
(They wanna take our light, make us fight, but never cry for the ones you love)

And you’re just pushing me down, pushing me down, pushing me down
(You wanna change the world, but your girls will be seen and not be heard)
You just crushing me down, crushing me down, crushing me down
(They wanna take our light, make us fight, but never cry for the ones you love)

And you’re just pushing me down, pushing me down, pushing me down
(They tell you, ‘trust your head, trust your head’)
You’re just pushing me down, pushing me down, pushing me down
(They wanna take our light, take our light, but never cry for the ones you love)

And you’re just pushing me down, pushing me down, pushing me down
(You wanna change the world, but your girls will be seen and not be heard)
You just crushing me down, crushing me down, crushing me down
(They wanna take our light, make us fight, but never cry for the ones you love)

An Evening of Dance

Standard

Writing to you from my plum seats at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center, getting ready to watch Alvin Ailey perform the classic Revelations, as well as, a world premiere piece by choreographer Robert Moses! Thanks to student rush, I get to view the performance from a great orchestra seat. The summer of culture and me-time rages on! 😉

Happy Friday

Hola!

As I got ready for my mother-daughter weekend extravaganza in our nation’s capital, I ended up jamming to the new Michael Jackson (yes, that Michael) album on Spotify. And I got to say, it is short of spectacular. I feel that the producers on the project did an outstanding job of staying true to the King of Pop’s sound and it once again proved to me that a great voice and talent was taken from us too soon. Now enough of the gloom, may this song get you out of your seat and pique your interest to listen to the rest of the album over the weekend. Have a good one!

Ciao 🙂

Throwback Thursday

Standard

I love this time of year!!!

The decorations, the lights, the hustle and bustle, and the music especially! When I was younger, as soon as I could turn the calendar page from November to December I would rush down to our living room and pull out all of my favorite Christmas records to play over and over again when I got home from school. Because I was always keeping busy with dance, acting, and my artwork, when the holiday season would roll around I would take down one record in particular and begin choreographing my Christmas recital (which would be performed for all of my imaginary audience members in the foyer of our home or if it was particularly nice I would get my brother’s old plastic Fisher Price record play and perform on the front porch)

I suppose I’m prefacing all of this because the woman in this throwback picture allowed me the privilege of teaching one of those dances to my class for our church’s Cantata celebration one year. Mrs. Whitehead, who has known me all of my life, taught me how to point my toes and elongate my legs and arms for 8 years (3-11 years old) in her ballet classes. She has always been of my biggest cheerleaders, and gave me the opportunity to choreograph not one but three pieces over the  course of my time with her, helping me along the way but really giving me the opportunity to fly at such a young age.

This is my love letter to her and to all of my mentors, teachers, and supporters through the years, whose love and kindness have brought me to New York allowing me to believe and firmly KNOW that this is what I am supposed to be doing with my life.

Ciao 😉

And here is one of my Christmas favorites, which Cantata dance was choreographed too 🙂

Birthdays All Around!

Standard

What a flippin’ FANTASTIC weekend I had! Not only did I get to celebrate my best friend/roomie’s birthday in fabulous Atlantic City, but I got to celebrate becoming an aunt for the THIRD time because my handsome and utterly adorable nephew Jaxen was born on Friday!!! (i’m so excited to see him, and hold him, and love him next month)

So you can imagine between the clubs, casinos, Boardwalk, food, text messages, photos, and phone call blitz, that this was definitely a weekend i’ll be remembering for years to come. As always a few photos from the weekend are included below. I got to say that Atlantic City was pretty sweet and cannot wait to go back. Spending time with the girls (Kristin, Bri, Cynthia, Kathleen and Amanda) was epic, we got to see Havana Brown spin the turntables and perform at Haven Nightclub at the Golden Nugget, dance to an amazing mix of top 40, R&B, and hip hop at Murmur at the fancy/schmanzy Borgata, and wander through the Tropicana and Outlet mall. Oh, and of course we went to the beach. WHOO! no wonder i’m so tired haha.

Hope your weekend was splendid that your week will be amazing where ever it may take you…
