Winter Wandering

Standard

Last week, I had the opportunity to enjoy my last few morsels of vacation with some friends. Getting in a little culture with Bloo at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, wandering around on the east side with Kendra. It was nice to walk around the galleries and get lost on the East Side. It made me realize how busy I had been over the past few months and how much I missed this version of New York. I hope you enjoy the pics!

2016: I’m Coming For Ya

Happy New Year everybody!

This year, I have decided to continue on the road of “Consistent and Persistent” that I began building in 2015. The mantra really helped me to focus on what was important and to really make bold moves in my personal and professional life. Building momentum to this idea I will also strive to promote myself and my work this year (so don’t be surprised to see more of the #shamelessplug on my Instagram!)

As I stated in my last post, I will only be posting once a week this year. So be sure to stop by every Thursday to see what’s happening in Harlem, and as always my Instagram feed will have the most up-to-date news and stories from my day to day life so follow me: @rocksolidmel.

Below are some of the ideas, phrases and quotes I want to use this year to get me from month to month. I hope that they will inspire you too!
Ciao 😊

Throwback Thursday

Standard

Graduation season has come and gone. Seeing the caps and gowns of various shades moving through the city brought smile to my face. Hard to believe it has been four years, since John Sexton announced we were officially graduates of New York University over the Yankees PA system.

Yes, graduating from NYU was, and is, one of my major life accomplishments thus far, however, the summer following graduation is what set the path I still follow today.

My apprenticeship at the Hangar Theatre from June-August of 2011, formed strong friendships, challenged me in unexpected ways, and helped me to see just what I would need to expect of myself in order to make it in the performance world. An exercise we did at the end of our time there is still with me to this day: a letter to myself to read the next year.

I wrote my hopes and dreams for the summer and my career, handed it off to Laura and Kris and forgot about it. Sure enough, one year later, almost to the date, my letter arrived in the mail. In honor of Throwback Thursday, and 4 full years out of undergrad, I have decided to post the letter here.

Life can be funny sometimes…

Melissa can you believe its been year since Lab Company? Well little old me at the end of this journey want to leave you with a few hopes and dreams.

1.  I hope you are fighting the good fight and are finding work that speaks to you and allows you to bring a piece of yourself to the work that you know no one else can do.

2.  Your goal of having one paid acting gig before Christmas really did come and you, Myles, and Kyla celebrated in a great way. (karaoke preferably 🙂 )

3. That you continue to build strong ties with your sister-in-law showing your love through acts of kindness and not just words.

4.  Build a relationship with another casting agent and always remember you can call Stephanie whenever you need.

5. Stay true to yourself, listening to your voice and the voice of God. Making tough decisions with clarity and grace.

Never forget where you came from! Hope you enjoyed Jilia’s wedding, that Langston, Ava, Mom, Dad, and Frank are healthy and well and that you’re even closer to getting that Equity card.

Ciao,
Melissa

#About Last Week

Gallery

The first week of September brimmed full with countless friendship dates and celebrations. As the transition begins, from summer to fall, many of my friends were either about to say “see you later” or “just dropping in!” So for today’s post, check out this recap, in words and photos, of my pretty full social calendar last week!

Monday September 1st:

Happy Hour Drinks with Kyla (finally back in the city after a summer of work and travel away) and Kathleen (who has been super busy with her new post-grad job and travel, as well). So great to see the gals on the first of the month to catch up, be dumbfounded by the idea that we had basically met 7 years ago this month, and chatted about what to do for Kyla’s birthday on Friday.

Tuesday September 2nd:

Attended a “see ya later” party for my friend Krystina at The Corner Social. I met Krystina during The Messiah Complex I did this past spring and am sad to see her go, to LA, of all places (grrr California keeps taking my friends) to get her acting into full gear. It was great to meet other close friends of hers sorry to see her leave, but definitely supportive of the move and all the great things headed her way.

Wednesday September 3rd:

My calendar listed Wednesday as, “Chloe Day!” in all caps because Chloe was in the city on a quick trip from LA (grrr). I haven’t seen the gal in almost a year and to top it off not only did I get to see her, but Greg and Aidan joined in on the fun. Considering I haven’t seen Greg in almost two years and we both live in the city is outrageous! and Aidan had just come back into town after a summer of theatre in Maine. So good to see them all and we even ended up at Adler for words of wisdom and reflection from Jimmy Tripp, our master Shakespeare professor before parting ways. All in all, a good hump day.

That evening, another “see you later” took place at The Corner Social (it’s a favorite neighborhood spot) with Jason and Chris. Jason is off to do “To Kill A Mockingbird” in Virginia and wanted to have a drink and chat before heading off. So good to see him (why I didn’t take a photo of him I’m not sure) and know he will knock the audience’s socks off, per usual.

Chris and I, at Jason’s see you later.

Friday September 5th:

Kyla’s Birthday was Friday and with it came another opportunity to hang with college friends and have a good time! I got to see Aidan and Kathleen again, finally saw Myles after what seemed like an eternity, Nolan, Trevor and Julia. Good drinks, Trivial Pursuit, Connect Four, walking down NYU memory lane, and making a dance floor in the bar made it a great night! Love them all and so glad I got to see them.

Sunday September 7th:

And last but certainly not least, hung out with AJ out in Brooklyn for a little Sunday football fun. My Saints didn’t get a win this week, but the overstimulation of EVERY game playing in the bar was pretty sweet. Don’t think I could make it an every week kind of practice, but being able to watch all of my fantasy team players live was great all the same.

Maybe I should have titled September, Social September? But all in all, it was great jumpstart to the month before work (yes) takes over my schedule once again.

Have a great Monday!

Ciao 🙂

Happy Birthday Cynthia!

Standard

As we get older, our friend circles become more scattered. We grow and move from childhood homes, graduate and go to points unknown post graduation, embarking on new adventures sprinkled with spouses and children. Geez, we’re only 25 and some of us have actually gotten to the “start a family” space in this game of Life! But, I digress.

My best friend, Cynthia P. is celebrating her 25th birthday today! And while I may not be with her in St. Thomas, her new home, on this important day, I shall have a French 75 this evening in her honor. As I’ve written in posts past, Cynthia is the epitome of the free spirit to me. She is smart, courageous, and funny with a heart of gold. As with all friendships, we have had some ups and downs, but the ups definitely are too numerous to keep us down for long. Having lived with her for two years and known her for seven, we have definitely grown up together and become some pretty fierce females.

I cannot wait to see her in January, fingers crossed on the beach in the Virgin Islands. But until then, Cynthia I wish you nothing but happiness and fun today! Out do your AC weekend last year, I know you’ve got it in you!

Ciao 🙂

With all of the warm and fuzzy feelings about surrounding Graduation Season, it seems only fitting to post a photo or two from High School and College. Here ya go!

In this photo there are two current grad students, two proud owners of master's degrees, and two actors cutting it up on stage in OH and NY. Not too shabby!
